Taking a holistic approach to heart health and the overall wellbeing of employees involves focusing on multiple aspects of their lives. Nebraska Medicine adopts this approach to improve the wellbeing of its employees and by addressing various areas such as physical health, mental health, financial wellness, and work-life balance. By doing so, Nebraska Medicine demonstrates its commitment to creating a healthy and supportive work environment.

Nebraska Medicine shares how they empower their employees to embrace holistic wellbeing.

At Nebraska Medicine, we are committed to our colleagues' health, wellbeing, safety, and development. We believe in fulfilling our brand promise of "Serious Medicine. Extraordinary Care." by providing all our colleagues with the ability to function happily at full capacity in all aspects of their lives - physically, emotionally, financially, and socially. That's why we partnered with Navigate Wellbeing Solutions to develop our Empower Your Wellbeing program for colleagues.

Wellbeing is not one-size-fits-all, and we wanted to partner with a technology company that would allow for personalization and flexibility in designing a user-friendly program and easy-to-use platform that could accommodate all employees regardless of factors like health status, age, physical abilities, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, and work status.

So, how do we achieve this? Collaboration is key! Reviewing our Total Rewards and claims and wellbeing program data annually helps us provide our colleagues with the most meaningful, whole-person wellbeing program. Here are some of the resources we offer:

Physical wellbeing

  • Clinic pharmacy offers our colleagues a smoking cessation program.
  • Our Bariatrics and Diabetes Education teams offer low-cost weight management classes.
  • We offer a Type II diabetes reversal program through Virta Health for benefits enrolled colleagues and their dependents.
  • Free onsite fitness facilities with 24/7 access at three campus locations with free fitness assessments and free personal training (in-person and virtual).

Emotional wellbeing

  • Colleagues have a vast amount of mental health resources at their fingertips through our EAP. We utilize many of their training sessions, such as Mental Health First Aid in the Workplace and Developing Supportive Connections, to name a couple.
  • Our Peers in Need of Support (PiNS) program allows colleagues to connect with other colleagues trained in peer support. During the COVID pandemic, we saw an uptick in the utilization of this program as many of our staff struggled to care for those with the virus and also trying to ensure their own safety and that of their families.

Financial wellbeing

  • We encourage colleagues to choose active commuting to work through walking or cycling. Showers and bike lockers are available for those who choose to actively commute. Our local bike share organization has offered discounted passes and rides for our employees.
  • Carpooling is also a great option, so we partner with our bus system to offer free bus passes to colleagues electing to carpool or take a bus to work.
  • Quality, licensed, and affordable childcare providers can be found through the help of Upwards, which finds in-home providers, babysitters, nannies, and center and backup care for our working parents.

We are excited to introduce our new Lifestyle Spending Account, available to all eligible employees. At our company, we understand that inclusivity involves recognizing and respecting the unique spending preferences of each employee. While one colleague may prefer investing in a standing desk, another might prefer purchasing blue-light glasses. A working parent may find it helpful to opt for a meal kit to simplify their transition from work to home. With this new account, we hope to support our employees in their individual lifestyles and needs.

Community Wellbeing

  • Community Strong is our commitment to transforming our communities. We promote volunteerism by providing colleagues with an opportunity to volunteer and get paid to do so. Having departments come together to serve a shared purpose outside the office is critical to our commitment to our communities.
  • Corporate-sponsored events like fun runs, food drives, charitable donations, and employee appreciation activities consistently bring our staff together for the greater good.
  • Our new Community Wellness Collaborative (CWC) is housed in an underserved neighborhood in North Omaha. It's a community hub where our Nebraska Medicine colleagues are intentionally addressing health disparities and creating career pathways through educational programs, nutrition services, health resources, and screenings.
  • At the heart of our DEI and Wellbeing teams are our Employee Resource Groups, where we say, “You can come sit next to me!” We have 10 ERGs with one on the way so that all colleagues have a seat at the proverbial table. Our ERGs are such a unique and valuable collection of people who advocate for underrepresented groups, promote cultural understanding and awareness, foster inclusivity, support personal and professional growth, give back to the community, and impact not just colleagues but the community.

The Nebraska Medicine Wellbeing team considers all these internal and external resources and partnerships to create our Empower Your Wellbeing program to actively engage our people in their total health. Each month, we offer one activity or challenge from our four domains of wellbeing (physical, emotional, financial, and community wellbeing). We have everything from Navigate created group challenges to webinars and education offered by our benefits partnerships to volunteering opportunities to quick and fun wins like wearing red on National Wear Red Day. Those who participate in our wellbeing program may be eligible for wellbeing incentives tied to select Nebraska Medicine health plans during annual benefits enrollment.

The bottom line, we want our Nebraska Medicine colleagues to be at their best. We want them to be extraordinary. Being able to play a role in that education, support, and transformation makes it easy to come to work each day.
